3d systems today added two new materials to its line of 3D printed metals for applications in aerospace, automotive, semiconductor, energy and mold making.
Approved Scalmalloy (A) and M789 certified (A) have been optimized for use on the additive manufacturing pioneer’s direct-to-metal printing platform as a result of work with materials specialists APWORKS and voestalpine BÃHLER Edelstahl to qualify the two materials.
Scalmalloy is a high strength aluminum alloy with a tensile strength of 520MPa and a yield strength of 480MPa, significantly stronger than AlSi10Mg. Scalmalloy’s high strength makes it ideal for the additive manufacturing of low weight load bearing components and high strength, corrosion resistant aluminum parts, including aerospace RF components, structural and fluid management components for the automobile, and structures for managing fluid flow and thermal management. for the semiconductor space. 3D Systems adds that parts printed in Scalmalloy can be chemically cleaned during post-processing to provide a final part with an optimal surface finish.

M789 is a tough, corrosion resistant tool steel that would be ideal for making high strength molds and tooling that can be hardened up to 52HRC and are also cobalt free. The certification of the material on the DMP platform was obtained in collaboration with GF Machining Solutions. 3D Systems claims that parts printed in M789, such as mold inserts, drill bits, cutting tools, and automotive parts such as transmission parts and axle components, can withstand long-term use and are able to withstand the rigors of repetitive manufacturing processes and high humidity environments.
âOur automotive industry customers increasingly rely on additive manufacturing to advance and accelerate their innovation,â said Kevin Baughey, Segment Leader, Transportation and Motorsport, 3D Systems. âThe integration of the M789 into our metal 3D printing solution provides greater precision for our automotive customers. This allows them to use the technology for applications that require higher fidelity and thinner walls, such as die inserts with conformal cooling and tire tread molds, and provides them with a competitive advantage.
Customers are now invited to work with 3D Systems’ Application Innovation Group (AIG) to certify materials for use on its DMP Flex 350 and DMP Factory 350 machines. Parts printed in both materials will be on display at FAST + TCT later this month, 3D Systems will be exhibiting at booth E7601 alongside its latest developments in polymer materials, including the recent Accura AMX Rigid Black.
