Beaumont Enterprise is changing its opinion post to focus on local residents.

When you open the Beaumont Enterprise every morning, we want you to be greeted with stories you won’t find anywhere else: enrollment trends at local schools and universities; in-depth and inspiring interviews with local women battling breast cancer; or the story of a retired sea captain who tap danced for 13 days in a local park to honor service members who would never return home, to name a few.

Last year, however, we noticed that our reviews page didn’t seem to offer enough. Instead, we serve a number of opinions from people who have never been to Southeast Texas on matters that may or may not concern you all. Not only has the relevance of these opinions been questioned, but also their uniqueness.

You can find these syndicated columnists anywhere, in addition to all the opinions we all read day in and day out on the social networks of our choice.

While the local newspaper was once a great place for an individual to share their thoughts, we no longer have the corner in this market.

Several months ago, we launched a project to solicit more letters to the editor and guest columns from all of you. And, honestly, I was overwhelmed by the response.

Instead of a place to draw a political line in the sand, our Opinions page has instead started to become a place where community members can advocate for their organizations or a growing number of Lamar University students for flex their writing muscles to reflect on a memory or teach us all a little something about heroes that history may have forgotten.

Essentially, it becomes a home again to reflect the hues of the tapestry that makes up southeast Texas.

So, we want to shine a light on that – totally nationally syndicated column-free ops pages.

As a result, Wednesday and Sunday will become our opinion days, where you’ll find the pages where they’ve always been, this time without the talking heads.

And for all of you who call me every day and forget to include the prayer, you will find it on page A2 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesday and Sunday we will include it where it has always been.

My goal as editor is to keep all of you, our readers, front and center. I really believe this change will do that.

If you have an idea for a guest column or would like to submit a letter to the editor, please email them to [email protected] or [email protected]
