Formlabs made a number of dental announcements today, including updates to its Fuse 1 3D printer and stereolithography material library.

Building on its strong presence in the dental segment, the company’s Fuse 1 bench-top selective laser sintering system has been validated for the production of orthodontic models. This means that dental manufacturers will now be able to produce over 150 dental models of transparent aligners in a single print and, compared to SLA, will allow laboratories and manufacturers of transparent aligners to increase production and reduce the cost per piece by 50%.

A reformulation of the Formlabs model resin was also announced that would reduce print speed by 50% and overall labor time, including post-processing, by 60%, when used with the flagship Form 3B. from Formlabs and the dental-focused Form 3BL 3D. printers.

“Dental manufacturing requires a high degree of customization, and 3D printing is the key solution to enabling this customization at scale without sacrificing cost, speed or quality,” said Dávid Lakatos, Product Manager at Formlabs. “With more than ten dental specific resins powering our line of SLA printers, we are disrupting the dental market with high speed resins for practitioners and dental laboratories to create high quality, patient specific dental products. Now, with the validation of the Fuse 1 for dental manufacturing, we are expanding our dental offerings to our range of SLS printers and enabling even higher speed, versatility and price for our dental users.

Finally, Formlabs’ Form 3B, Form 3BL and Fuse 1 machines have been validated by 3Shape for its Clear Aligner Enterprise solution, making the Fuse 1 the first SLS 3D printer validated by the dental scanning and software company for the production of transparent aligner models. The news builds on an existing partnership that has previously seen the manufacture of dental products such as surgical guides and splints.

Sam Wainwright, Product Manager, Formlabs Dental, added: “Formlabs Dental is laser focused to make flexible and patient-specific treatment protocols accessible to all dental professionals through 3D printing. To achieve this, we are constantly looking for partners – 3Shape recognizes the benefits of our printers; they are affordable, easy to use and ultimately meet the industry’s need to digitize workflows to optimize the patient experience.
