Violation of model code of conduct; notice to Parmar for the publication of an advertisement

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): District collector and returning officer Asheesh Singh has issued a notice to Congress mayoral candidate Mahesh Parmar for posting an ad just a day before the poll in the Ujjain Municipality elections. An explanation was requested within 24 hours.

The notice states that, according to the State Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct, it is prohibited to present election-related matters to the public through film, electronic or print media or any other average for a period of 48 hours after the end of the campaign. The city’s congressional committee released a print ad Tuesday for congressional mayoral candidate Mahesh Parmar. This was considered by the tax collector to be a violation of the instructions of the Electoral Commission.

The returning officer issued a notice to Parmar requesting that on July 5, 2022, an advertisement soliciting votes in the newspaper be published on the front page, which falls within the category of offense under section 126 of the ‘Representation of the People Act-1951’ and the ‘MP Local Authority (Election Offences) Act-1964 updated in 2014’.
